As everyday living becomes more environmentally conscious, Australian homeowners are leading the charge with sustainable renovation materials that are not only eco-friendly but also stylish and functional.
“More and more, we have clients with a desire to be more environmentally ethical in their product use for both house and landscape construction. This can be difficult given that traditional materials like concrete or steel come with a large environmental price tag,” says Matt Leacy, creative director and co-founder of the Landart.
“It can often be quite expensive – especially as costs continue rising – to go with the most sustainable options so we always advocate for our clients to make changes where their design vision and budget will allow. If we’re all making incrementally better choices, we are still having a positive impact on the environment,” adds Matt.
“If you don’t have the luxury of a healthy budget, it’s still possible to make smaller, cost-effective changes to planned renovations. We’re also finding more and more of our clients are opting to stay and renovate rather than moving on from properties in the current climate.
“Most of our clients are also more aware about ensuring their materials are ethically sourced. This includes timber, stone, and other natural elements. While it’s often not possible to design and install an entirely sustainable space (when there are budget constraints and other issues) if we all make some positive changes to this end, there’s a collective benefit to the environment. These better environmental choices are also the materials that are trending for renovations in 2024.”
Matt Leacy’s top choices for recycled or environmentally-friendly products include:
1. Recycled timber – Recycled timber is making a significant comeback in modern Australian homes. Salvaged from old buildings, bridges, and wharves, this material adds a unique, rustic charm to any space while reducing the demand for new wood. Homeowners are using recycled timber for flooring, wall panels, and furniture, creating warm, inviting interiors with a story to tell.
2. Bamboo flooring – Bamboo, one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth, is gaining popularity as a sustainable flooring option. Its durability, resistance to moisture, and natural aesthetic make it an ideal choice for contemporary and traditional homes alike. Available in various finishes, bamboo flooring is perfect for those looking to be eco-consciousness.
3. Reclaimed bricks – Reclaimed bricks are a testament to sustainable building practices. By repurposing bricks from demolished buildings, homeowners can achieve a timeless, industrial look while reducing landfill waste. These bricks are perfect for feature walls, outdoor patios, and fireplaces, adding character and history to modern homes.
4. Low-VOC paints – Indoor air quality is a growing concern for many Australians, and low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paints are the perfect solution. These paints release fewer harmful chemicals into the air, creating a healthier living environment. Available in a wide range of colours and finishes, low-VOC paints ensure that your home is both beautiful and safe.
5. Eco-friendly insulation – Insulation is crucial for maintaining energy efficiency, and sustainable options like sheep’s wool, recycled cotton, and cellulose are trending. These materials not only provide excellent thermal performance but are also biodegradable and non-toxic, making them a smart choice for the environmentally conscious homeowner.
6. Solar tiles – Combining functionality with aesthetics, solar tiles are revolutionizing renewable energy in home design. These tiles blend seamlessly with traditional roofing materials while generating clean energy, reducing your carbon footprint, and lowering electricity bills. Solar tiles are the perfect blend of sustainability and modern design.
7. Sustainable cabinetry – Eco-friendly cabinetry made from sustainably sourced wood or reclaimed materials is a growing trend in Australian homes. These cabinets are not only stylish and durable but also contribute to responsible forestry practices. Choose finishes that highlight the natural beauty of the wood for a timeless, elegant look.
Technology also finds its place in outdoor spaces in 2024, helping to bring time saving and climate smart functions. Smart irrigation systems, innovative LED lighting, clever water capture, solar and automated maintenance tools are being integrated into designs to enhance efficiency and help make property maintenance easier with a reduction of energy and water use.
