The best-dressed guests at the 2024 Fashion Awards layered their red-carpet gowns beneath what looked like coats inherited from their grandmothers. See: Alexa Chung and Jodie Turner-Smith posing in crystal-encrusted cocktail slips and hirsute coats with big sloping shoulders. It’s a glamorous look – an “Oh, this old thing?” kind of style template – which Selena Gomez now seems to be channelling over in the States.
Last night, the actor was photographed at a recording of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert – where she was promoting the Saint Laurent-produced movie Emilia Pérez – in a leather miniskirt and a sequined jacket with a Penny Lane coat trimmed with thick pelts of fuzz. She looked like she was making a tacit audition to revive Kate Hudson’s role in Almost Famous: a film made in 2000 about an ascendant music journalist with a closet of ’70s-inspired coats and an AAA pass to rock concerts, which just so happens to be inspiring the winter wardrobes of fashion journalists in 2024.
“It’s a staple that has stood the test of time, thanks to its ‘I’m with the band’ appeal,” said this magazine’s shopping editor Joy Montgomery in a recent article, citing Bella Hadid, Suki Waterhouse and Dua Lipa among its most frequent proponents. “[Hudson] was the girl we all wanted to be, and that coat is probably more, well famous, than the film itself these days.” The coat – preferably old, second-hand, infused with the memories of someone else’s fun – stays on this party season.
