“Doing a Vogue photoshoot on a packed London street is always going to be colourful – in many ways,” laughs hairstylist Anthony Turner, who styled model of the moment Angelina Kendall’s waves for her debut on the January 2025 cover. “For me, it was just so great to see how the public interacted with Angelina. Everyone was so obsessed – it was cute!”
Kendall was captured outdoors with the kind of cool-girl hair we all want – think tousled waves and a slightly mussed finish – and indoors with sky-high roots in a coiffed up-do. Turner dreamed up the two contrasting looks based on the different locations, he explains. “I created the hair as a reaction to the fact we were both outside and inside, location wise,” he explains. “Outside, I felt that Angelina needed to be free and ‘real’ in a sense, whereas inside the studio I wanted to show another side to her… A glamorous, confident bombshell!”
So, how did he create the looks? For the super wearable, outdoorsy waves: “Angelina has such amazing, natural textured hair, so I literally used the Moroccanoil Curl Cream on her damp hair, then dried using a diffuser,” Turner says. Those voluminous roots required a little more effort. “I applied the Schwarzkopf Volume Mousse liberally to her hair, used a round brush to blow dry, then set the hair with a curling iron.”
After that he teased Kendall’s roots and pinned the hair back to create a bouffant-style bob shape. “The great thing about this look was all of the small mistakes that happened as I was pinning her hair up,” he adds. “The imperfections were fun, and made the look that little bit better.”
One might imagine the sight of photographer Mikael Jansson snapping a supermodel-in-waiting at Piccadilly Circus in clouds of feathers and sequins created something of a commotion. To Londoners? Well, it was probably just another day in the Big Smoke. “When you’re on a London street, you get to see the real London, with all of its eclectic and eccentric characters,” notes Turner. “It brought home just why I love the city I live in so much.”
