Melbourne-born bathhouse Sense Of Self, the first of Australia’s modern bathhouses, will open its long-awaited second outpost in Sydney next year.
Located on the border of Surry Hills and Paddington and housed within a two-storey industrial warehouse spanning more than 1,000 square metres, Sense Of Self will be the most spacious indoor bathhouse in Sydney where guests are invited to come as they are; sans expectations and digital devices.
It follows the success of their booked-out facility in Collingwood which opened its doors in 2020, with the goal of stripping back the traditional spa experience to provide a space for guests to feel held and to reconnect with self, place and community.
The Space
Sense Of Self Sydney will boast multiple large mineral pools (39°C), spacious saunas (80°C), a Hammam steam room (46°C), and cold plunge pools (10-12°C), as well as dedicated treatment rooms and plenty of relaxation space where guests are encouraged to take their time, or even have a snooze.
The design
The generosity of space will be underpinned by Sense Of Self’s elevated design aesthetic to create a truly transformative experience for guests. With subtle nods to the flagship bathhouse in Collingwood, the design of Sense Of Self Sydney will respond to the local area, climate and community.
They’ve appointed architecture and interior design practice RITZ&GHOUGASSIAN to bring the vision for Sydney to life through considered, universal design practices and a focus on user experience.
Sense Of Self founder and director Freya Berwick, says: “Sense Of Self Sydney will embrace the rich colour palette that is unique to our new site, local area and to Sydney itself. Expect textured surfaces, exposed brickwork and expansive spaces of lightness and darkness to hold both the social and solo bather.
“Bathhouses are so much more than the sum of their parts. They serve different functions for different people; from recovery bathing through to social connection and body acceptance, and we love catering to all of those needs. Sense Of Self is a space that holds and positively challenges our guests and our goal is to balance inspiring yet functional design with warmth, accessibility, and customer care.
“Communal bathing is all about sharing the experience with others, but it is also an intimate and vulnerable experience that calls for generosity of space, which Sense Of Self Sydney will deliver across 1,000 square metres.”
As an antidote to the demands of modern life, Sense Of Self is a phone-free haven for tired bodies and stressed minds to take some serious time out. Choose your own relaxation adventure and circulate between the large mineral baths (39°C), Finnish saunas (80°C), Hammam/steam rooms (46°C) and cold plunge pools (10-12°C) or take it easy in the dedicated relaxation lounge with freshly brewed tea, dried fruits and plenty of inspired reading material.
Sense Of Self Sydney is scheduled to open in 2025. Be the first to hear about Sense Of Self Sydney progress updates, special events, introductory offers and founding memberships.
