Ankle boots are out, apparently, but if you still need a cold-weather footwear option that isn’t riding boots, and you already have it in your closet, Daisy Edgar-Jones has an alternative. A comfy-cosy orthopaedic alternative. It’s wearing your Birkenstock sandals with socks. A bold choice, yes, but hear us out.
The Twisters actor was spotted in London on December 1 dressed in what is about to be my new go-to winter ’fit. She wore jeans and a blue coat with an embroidered blue scarf from the independent British brand Hades Wool. In keeping with the blue-on-blue theme, she finished the casual look with blue socks and classic Birkenstock sandals.
If this seems a little out there to you, just remember, it was not so long ago that it would have been considered gauche and dad-like to wear white socks with black loafers. Times have changed, friends, and so have trends.
And obviously, Daisy Edgar-Jones did not invent the Birkenstocks-and-socks combo. It is a look that has long been favoured by middle-aged dads and, occasionally, Gigi Hadid. For what it’s worth, Hadid has also been seen in the clogs version of Birkenstocks, which are a slightly more conventional cold-weather choice.
Ankle boots and Uggs may not be for everyone, but this reporter would argue that Birkenstocks with socks actually are.
