Low-rise jeans and newsboy caps aren’t the only divisive trends from the 2000s that are on their way back. Indie sleaze hair and makeup, as seen here on Nicole Kidman, appears to be making its return.
Kidman arrived at The Gothams Film Awards on December 2 looking like the second coming of Jenny Humphrey with her artfully teased, straightened blonde hair and heavy eyeliner which she set off with a dark red lip. To complete the emo-lite glam, Kidman added a short, plum manicure and a floral black dress.
The dress, by the way, is an archival 1998 Dolce & Gabbana slip, featuring hand-painted florals and a short train, which was very much giving “dark feminine” energy. Rounding out Kidman’s look were a few rings, earrings, and pointed toe black stilettos.
It’s a slightly toned-down version of the eyeliner-heavy, shaggy-haired emo heyday, to be sure, but the vibes are there. We saw it on Avril Lavigne, famously, but also Ashlee Simpson, Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton, and Lindsay Lohan.
Nicole Kidman isn’t the first celeb to revive a polarising styling trend from the Y2K era. Megan Thee Stallion channeled early e-girls with a two-toned pastel pink and purple hair look. Blake Lively is bringing back “Upper East Side blonde.” And Anne Hathaway has pulled newsboy caps out from the early aughts vault.
