Adolescence is the 2025 Netflix crime drama you need to know about

Netflix crime TV series Adolescence has just dropped its first look pics.

Co-written by This Is England and Peaky Blinders star Stephen Graham and Joy writer Jack Thorne – who also wrote Help, the incredible Covid-19 care home drama starring Graham and Jodie Comer – this could be a big one. Graham will also star in Adolescence, alongside The Crown‘s Erin Doherty.

The crime TV series will have four episodes – each episode will be filmed in a one-shot style, basically seeing the action unfold in one continuous shot each episode. It has been described as an “emotionally searing and innovative series” and “a truly singular television event”. Of course, it touches on the very real epidemic of violence against women and girls (VAWG), so it’s set to be a powerful watch.

Here’s what we know so far about Adolescence.

Adolescence plot

According to the official synopsis, “Adolescence tells the story of how a family’s world is turned upside down when 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) is arrested for the murder of a teenage girl who goes to his school.

“Stephen Graham will play Jamie’s father and ‘appropriate adult’, Eddie Miller. Ashley Walters stars as Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe, and Erin Doherty is Briony Ariston, the clinical psychologist assigned to Jamie’s case.”

Netflix says: “The gripping story unfolds in real time as the main characters — from the central family to the detectives investigating the crime — search for answers in the wake of a shocking tragedy. Who is actually responsible? Why did it happen? Could it have been prevented?”

No doubt it’s set to be a thought-provoking watch.

We would predict that the writing on Adolescence will be sensitive and powerful, judging by the work co-writer Jack Thorne has just brought in the world. He and his wife Rachel Mason co-developed the brilliant IVF film Joy – starring James Norton, Thomasin McKenzie and Bill Nighy – which explored the stories of the pioneering team behind the development of IVF, and the social stigma they faced. Both Thorne and Mason were inspired to write it after their own experiences and struggles while going through IVF.

Adolescence cast

Joining Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty will be Owen Cooper (who will play Jamie), Top Boy‘s Ashley Walters as Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe who is investigating Jamie’s case, Game of Thrones star Faye Marsay, Christine Tremarco, Mark Stanley (Happy Valley), Jo Hartley and Amélie Pease.
